The Impressionism movement began in France in the 19th century(1801-1900s) paintings from impressionists would use small, soft and thin brushstrokes. impressionism had open an uncommon optical angles, and the use of colors that illustrates light changes. It's like you can see in a picture how the lights show as time is going by, and there is a sense of movement. Colors was more significant than lines, and the various colors painted on the canvas. Impressionists paintings is like an early photograph, because it captures that movement. For example; This is painting named "Young woman Painting"(1883) By Berthe Moriso. Moriso has been exploring Impressionism between 1874 and 1886. She would paint her artwork outdoors and would rapidly brushstroke her canvas by using watercolors and pastels. When you look at this picture up close, you can see the swift strokes of the painting, and the amount of diverse colors is being mix together. When you step back, you'll see a young woman, sitting and knitting. You would be able to tell that the young lady is sitting outside because, of the different shades of grass. Basically she could be sitting in a garden or a park. This artwork is like an a early photo that was taken with a camera. The artist captured the exact moment, that will stay forever.
Post impressionism is pretty much the same as impressionism such as the use of bright colors, heavy paints, striking brushstrokes, etc. The differences though is the strenuous use of shapes that are geometric, and use of colors that are unorthodox. impressionists would work on their artwork indoors, instead of outdoors. Impressionists would investigate different ways to paint a picture, without the concern of the appearance of an object. Another difference between impressionism and post impressionism is that post impressionism is more time-consuming, and captures the intense movement. For example; This is a painting named " Corridor In The Aslyum"(1889) by Vincent Van Gogh. This painting was painted by the artist himself when he was at an asylum for twelve months tillthe near end of his life. Gogh sent the colorful picture to his brother. The artist is not showing just the image of the asylum, he's expressing emotions in the painting by using various colors. symbolizes an emotion. As you can see there's majority of red, yellow, white, and a hint of blue.it's like all of Gogh's feelings were put into this painting and sent as a message to his sibling.

Such as ruby, Gold, Purple, green-blue together and a dash of white. In the background, there are hills showing a little depth, and you can see the castle. The colors makes the picture stand-out and vibrant. At the top of the artwork, you'll see a man holding a a blue ball on his right hand, and be his sides are two angels. The light and dark are really working together extremely nicely. It's like the sun is shining, and the bull is blocking the sunlight from Hercules leg. That's where you see his right leg in the shade. This picture also has depth to it, showing a few people in the background. Some of people would be familiar to some eyes. On the far right, is a couple of people called naiads and they are filling the horns with flower and fruits. To the right is Hercules fighting with Antaeus. Throughout the rebirth period,Many of the artworks had space, more colors, different perspectives and illustrate the christian bible. For example; This Painting called "The Last Supper" was made by an artist named Leonardo Da Vinci. he painting is about Jesus telling his fellow followers that somebody at this table will betray him. You can tell how each man their own individual identity because of the style of their hair, clothing, and expression of their face. The expression on their face shows shock, and horror. The painting also has one-point linear perspective. That means from behind Jesus head there's a fade point. The walls follow the window to show a depth.
The Baroque period began in the 1600s. Paintings and sculptures would be more dramatic, and a real strong sense of light and dark. Body and or face expressions would be more theatrical. This is a painting called "Taking of Christ." by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. As you look at the picture you can see, how the light and dark work together.
