PS1 Artist

Huma Bhabha was born in 1962 in Karachi, Pakistan.  She received her bachelors from Rohde Island School of Design, and then went to Columbia University in 1989 for her masters.  Huma Bhabha have her first solo museum show in New York. 30 of her statues was displayed, plus her collage-drawing spread in MoMA PS1. The artist had a longtime interest in science fiction in the 1970s and general themes such as war, death, cultural displacement and memory. Bhabha sculpts expressive, cluster, rough texture, unusual materials like Styrofoam, air-dried clay, wires, cork, and construction scraps. Bhabhas would melt and put the materials together and create figures that is a mixture of construction to a feeling of environment sense. The statues would have the sculpture style would take place during the ancient times. that is similar to the ancient time, but is made by dispose material which makes the artist a contemporary artist.  She creates  mxiture of science fiction and traditional cutlure all together. This statue is called Ghost of Humankindness” (2011). It’s a sinister,automaton-like figure that stands over 8 feet and  1100 lbs. The body is stacked together in a totemic style made from Styrofoam. The face is deformed as it was melted and painted in bronze. Then you have the collage-drawings. Each picture has a form of a skeletal head, some of which are covered over a lot of resemblance of miserable scenery. A couple of the drawings would be in large scales and the use of hint of bright colors that are less straightforward than the statues. Huma Bhabha’s artwork is the mixture of future and the past. By sculpting the historical figurative, using old and modern objects that are thrown away, and expressing the future in a dreaded way.

Outline for my Artistt.

Kara Walker was born November 26, 1969 Stockton California. Her father was her influence to become an artist when she was a little girl. Walker is an contemporary artist who looks into race, gender, sexuality, and violence. Walker is the best known artist for exploring the raw information of the difference of the particular work  The style Walker use is collage, drawing, painting, performance, film, video, shadow puppetry, light projections, and  animations . Walker artwork is both beautiful and very disturbing. The silhouettes would tell different stories. Kara Walker artwork takes place the civil war and slavery era, which is the 18th century.  Kara Walker explores the raw information  and expose terrifying and cringing images of the dark side of slavery history. .What's significant about the artist's work is how it can attract and effect the viewers at the same time and displaying a specific time period in a exaggerated distorted way comically.

The first picture by Kara Walker is named "Gone, An Historical Romance of a civil war as it occurred between the dusky thighs of one Negress and her heart. (1994) The title "Gone came from a novel and movie "Gone With The Wind" The silhouettes are lined and position  to tell a story. The second picture is named "Darkytown Rebellion"(2000) Walker would use light projectors and multi-colors for the background for the silhouettes. The viewer's shadow would be able to be part of the work by their own shadows showing on the wall by the light projector. "Darkytown Rebellion" shows a historical illustration of African Americans view in in American Culture. The third is a shadow puppetry a young Negress girl and the titled is called "Testimony" (2000) The fourth is a drawing named "The Daliy Constitution 1878" (2011) It's a disturbing drawing picture that shows the relationships between two different races in the south. The picture would be a very very dark reminder that is publicly expose to everyone that sees the picture. The last artwork is named "Excavated from the black heart of a negress" (2002) This is also a cut-out and it shows two women. This picture is like a sing of what goes on the south. The artwork is showing a baby being ripped out of one of the woman's stomach by other female. This expresses the reality that during the slavery era, babies would be taken from their mothers and be sold to another plantation.

From MOMA they said about Kara Walker has "transformed the craft , into a new type of epic history painting" and I agree because it express so much of the history of slavery in the 18th century and how Walker is able to make such artwork that is so revealing.

Surrealism and Cubism Art

Surrealism began in Paris at 1924 as a art and literary movement. Surrealism was committed to express imagination, dreams, and the subconscious of a human mind. Surrealism carried on the style of Dada. Dada is art that shows no sense of anything. Meaning random objects can be put together and can be call art. Likewise, surrealism also express objects that’s not real, and it’s like you’re looking inside the person’s brain. For example: This is an oil painting named “The Horde” by Max Ernest.  It was painting in 1927. It’s 44 7/8 X 57 ½ (114 X 146.1 cm) The reason he painted this artwork is because, Ernest had a violent experience in World War 1. He was influenced by the battle and made the artwork. As you can see, most of the figures are not shaped like humans or maybe animals, but more like monsters.  The use of colors makes the picture pop. The blue as the background makes the red, gold, and brown pop, because the colors are opposite to each other. The artist expresses a sense of movement and excitement. You can feel the objects moving in slow motion, because of the way the figure on the right is standing. The figure on the right is standing like a person, and his body is like it’s made out of bark. The figure has his hands in the air, and his right foot is close to the end of the canvas. At the bottom, it’s like sand, and at the bottom right of the canvas, it looks like the big figure is standing near a cliff. The more I keep studying the picture, I can sense that the big figure with a tree-like body is being victimized or attacked by these red and gold objects. The objects all the way to the left, is chaotic. If would ask me what do you see in that picture, not the tree guy, but the others on the left. I would say, I see a horse on its hind legs at the top left, a hand at the right, I see a orange body that is laying on its side at the middle of the painting, and at the bottom right, I see an under-cooked whole chicken that looks like he is going to fall off. It is very interesting how this artist used shapes that is absurd, and vivid colors to show what he had witness in real life, but use his imagination or maybe his dream to show others in a surreal or dream-like way.

Cubism art began in 1907 in Paris. This art style broke away from the traditions of painting that lasted for a hundred years. The way cubism breaks off from the tradition is by not painting a linear perspective, and depth. This is a painting by Pablo Picasso named “The Old Guitarist. It was made from 1903-1904. The picture is 48 3/8 X 32 ½ in. (122.9 x 82.6 cm). Picasso painted a picture that is unforgettable, and the of only one color, which is blue. Using one color for an artwork is called monochromatic. The guitarist has a mournful face expression, and the way he is sitting is depressing. Picasso present the old guitarist as a time where people are at their sad moments and the colors of the man and background is gloomy blue. This artwork is a reflection to Picasso, because during his younger years, when he was twenty-one he didn’t have any money and was almost about to be impoverished. Picasso represented the outcasts, ill, penniless during the earliest 20th century.

.
Kara Walker was born November 26, 1969, at Stockton, California.  her artworks are focus on race, gender, violence, sexuality, and identity. She is best known for her room-size of black cut-paper silhouettes, that's glue to the walls. Most of the silhouettes are taken back to the Victorian time which was (1837-1901)  It was basically showing the pasts in history and during the slavery years nothing else.Walker wanted to show the history in her artworks by cutting out the shadow of a person, and giving a background that goes well with the cut-out paper. There is the use of projected light to make a background for the silhouettes. The artist would use depth and space to make  a person feels they are part of the story that is being told.Walker wanted the work to be based off the unexpected time where a heroine saves the day, but at the same time Walker wants to kill the heroine herself.

Impressionism and Post Impressionism

The Impressionism movement began in France in the 19th century(1801-1900s) paintings from impressionists would use small, soft and thin brushstrokes. impressionism had open an uncommon optical angles, and the use of colors that illustrates light changes. It's like you can see in a picture how the lights show as time is going by, and there is a sense of movement. Colors was more significant than lines, and the various colors painted on the canvas. Impressionists paintings is like an early photograph, because it captures that movement. For example; This is painting named "Young woman Painting"(1883) By Berthe Moriso. Moriso has been exploring Impressionism between 1874 and 1886. She would paint her artwork outdoors and would rapidly brushstroke her canvas by using watercolors and pastels. When you look at this picture up close, you can see the swift strokes of the painting, and the amount of diverse colors is being mix together. When you step back, you'll see a young woman, sitting and knitting. You would be able to tell that the young lady is sitting outside because, of the different shades of grass. Basically she could be sitting in a garden or a park. This artwork is like an a early photo that was taken with a camera. The artist captured the exact moment, that will stay forever.

Post impressionism is pretty much the same as impressionism such as the use of bright colors, heavy paints, striking brushstrokes, etc. The differences though is the strenuous use of shapes that are geometric, and use of colors that are unorthodox. impressionists would work on their artwork indoors, instead of outdoors. Impressionists would investigate different ways to paint a picture, without the concern of the appearance of an object. Another difference between impressionism and post impressionism is that post impressionism is more time-consuming, and captures the intense movement. For example; This is a painting named " Corridor In The Aslyum"(1889) by Vincent Van Gogh. This painting was painted by the artist himself when he was at an asylum for twelve months tillthe near end of his life. Gogh sent the colorful picture to his brother. The artist is not showing just the image of the asylum, he's expressing emotions in the painting by using various colors. symbolizes an emotion. As you can see there's majority of red, yellow, white, and a hint of blue.it's like all of Gogh's feelings were put into this painting and sent as a message to his sibling.
